Across my years in telecom operations at Airtel and Tata, one pattern showed up in every field-heavy function I touched — service engineers, collections agents, field sales: head office always had less visibility into the field than it thought it did. Not because the field team was hiding anything. Because the tools connecting them to HQ stopped at a phone call and an end-of-day report, and everything in between was reconstructed after the fact rather than seen in real time.
Field teams generally aren't the problem — they're usually working hard, often harder than office-based colleagues because they're solving problems in real conditions, not on a spreadsheet. The problem is that their work is invisible until it's reported, and self-reported data has an obvious bias: what gets logged is what's easy to remember and comfortable to admit, not necessarily what actually happened. A missed visit, a task that took three attempts, a customer who wasn't home — these details get lost in an end-of-day summary, and they're exactly the details operations needs to fix root causes.
The word "tracking" makes people uncomfortable, and it should, if it's used to micromanage rather than to remove friction. Used well, geo-tagged check-ins do something different: they turn "I visited the site" into a verified fact instead of a claim, which protects the field employee as much as it informs HQ. A geo-tagged visit is evidence the work happened, at the time claimed, at the right location — useful when a customer disputes a visit, and useful when the honest answer is that the visit genuinely didn't happen and the task needs to be reassigned rather than assumed done.
Most field operations still assign work the way they did a decade ago: a supervisor with a list, a phone, and local knowledge of who's near what. It works, but it doesn't scale, and it depends entirely on that supervisor being available and remembering everything. Automated task assignment — routing the nearest available person to the nearest open task, based on real-time location and workload — does the same job without depending on any one person's memory or availability.
Most field operations measure performance in arrears: a weekly or monthly report showing how many visits happened, how many SLAs were missed, after the window to fix it has closed. Real-time SLA dashboards move that same information to where it can still be acted on — a visit approaching its deadline gets flagged while there's still time to reassign it, not written up as a miss three weeks later.
None of this is about squeezing more hours out of field teams. It's about closing the gap between what's happening in the field and what HQ can see, so decisions get made on facts instead of end-of-day summaries. Teams that get this right don't report better after the fact — they intervene while there's still time to matter.
